Don't Fry Your Nuts! :)
March 18, 2014

This is the everything-you-need-to-know-to-be-as-healthy-as-possible newsletter, brought to you by Kristy Russ, pharmacist and health consultant. I have close to 20 years experience in helping people improve their health.

I help people get healthy, and more importantly, stay that way so they're not miserable and just slowly dying for the last 20 years of their lives, which IS the "norm" today.

Hi,

I had an aha moment a couple of days ago.

I was going through my e-mails and as I'm reading a nutrition e-zine that I subscribe to, there's one small comment in it that jumps out at me and ruins my day. I'm embarrassed to say that I hadn't thought about it before but I knew it was true as soon as I read it.

And now I need to change one of my favorite snacks.

See if you knew...

Don't Fry Your Nuts!

I think we all know by now that nuts are an excellent food, especially as a snack choice. They're high in protein, good heart healthy fats, low glycemic, keep you full for a long time...

But did you know that you need to choose organic, raw nuts instead of the "regular" versions?

I didn't.

Turns out pretty much all the benefits are ABSENT in the regular variety. In fact, most of the time, the regular kind are actually bad for you, and of course you don't want that!

It kinda defeats the purpose of the so-called healthy snack right?

Turns out almost all "regular" nut brands cook their nuts by frying them in oil, usually peanut and/or canola oil. Just check the label and if you see added oils on the list of ingredients then you know your nuts have been FRIED. This high heat cooking process can steal all the health benefits from your nuts and even worse, leaves them coated with completely evil and horrible-for-your-health trans fat -- yikes!

So there I was, choosing a healthy snack like nuts only to find out the manufacturers screwed everything up with their irresponsible processing methods. Sadly, it happens all the time though- I really should have known.

I knew not to get the coated-in-sugar-or-anything-else varieties but I really loved the taste of this particular brand of spiced almonds (salt isn't a concern for me since I have low blood pressure so I thought I could get away with the regular variety).

So now you know- make sure you choose organic, raw nuts. Most regular stores carry them now so it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Sigh... now I have to go through the bother of roasting them myself (because I like them better that way). If anyone has a quick & tasty recipe, I'm all ears...

Since I'm on the topic of nuts, here's my pick for the top 3 varieties:

  • Walnuts. They're higher in Omega-3s than most nuts (which are Omega-6 dominant). Remember, you already get plenty of Omega-6's in your diet, which creates an imbalance that leads to chronic whole body inflammation.
  • Pistachios. Not only are these delicious, they're one of the lowest calorie nuts...you can eat a whopping 50 nuts while only consuming 160 calories. When you subtract the calories from their high fiber content, you're looking at even fewer calories.
  • Almonds. You've heard of super foods...well, almonds are super nuts. They're high in heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fats, and they boast significant quantities of these vitamins and minerals: vitamin E, magnesium, copper, vitamin B2 and phosphorus, as well as some antioxidants.

Nuts still make a great snack choice (and really, if it's a choice between "regular" nuts and the usual crap like chips/cookies/chocolate bars, pick the nuts). I often have a small handful for a mid-afternoon snack. Quick, convenient, portable, delicious, low glycemic, filling, fat-burning snackage! (Now I'll just make sure that they're the raw, organic variety)

Another Grateful Customer...

A quick update I got a few days ago...
