Mythbusting: "Healthy" Baked Potato Chips...
November 20, 2013

This is the everything-you-need-to-know-to-be-as-healthy-as-possible newsletter, brought to you by Kristy Russ, pharmacist and health consultant. I have close to 20 years experience in helping people improve their health.

I help people get healthy, and more importantly, stay that way so they're not miserable and just slowly dying for the last 20 years of their lives, which IS the "norm" today.

Hi,

As you know, I'm a pharmacist. Unfortunately our pharmacy doesn't sell only things that are good for you.(At least we've NEVER sold cigarettes, but I digress...)

We have the typical crummy snack foods that you find in all convenience stores. Of course, I make sure that we also have a few healthy choices. (Interestingly, those are the ones that rarely sell and usually end up expiring, but I digress again...)

I got the idea for this e-zine because I overheard(again) someone admonishing the other for their choice of snack because it was so bad for you and proceeded to tell that person why they should choose another snack that was so much healthier.

As a nutrition nut, I had to refrain from launching into a lecture about why the "healthy" choice was actually even worse. (Sometimes I do, but it just wasn't the right situation this time...)

So this e-zine is kind of the rant that I REALLY want to tell people when I hear these kind of comments...

Mythbusting:

"Healthy" Baked Potato Chips...

Hey, wanna know something? Baked potato chips AIN'T healthy!

And guess what else? They don't even taste good!

But hey, I'm sure you looked past that oh-so-lacking salty cardboard taste and texture many times in the name of health, which is why you NEED to be informed...

Are you ready to be SHOCKED?

Baked potato chips are more heavily processed and contain MORE health-damaging ingredients than regular ol' fried potato chips.

What?!

Yes, it's true, even demon-possessed trans fats can't compare with the health consequences contained in a bag of baked taters.

Just LOOK at these ingredients: (Now, in case you don't know why those ingredients are SO bad, let's go through each quickly.)

  • 1. Dried Potatoes: These are processed potatoes...not even fresh, and that makes them even higher glycemic if that's possible.

They are "dried" using high heat which makes them even worse. You see, when starch is subjected to high heat, it forms acrylamide, a potent cancer causing agent. No thanks!

  • 2. Genetically Modified Corn: In not 1, not 2, but THREE ingredients (corn starch, corn oil, and corn sugar).

GMO corn has been shown to lead to liver and kidney damage in rodents and the jury is still out on humans, but it's not looking good so far... I'll pass on being part of the lab experiement!

  • 3. Genetically Modified Soy: Same as above...bad news.

How do you know if things like soy and corn are non-GMO? 99% of soy and corn are genetically modified, so unless the ingredients are organic, the overwhelming odds are that soy and corn ingredients are genetically modified.

  • 4. Corn Sugar (AKA high fructose corn syrup): Rated as the #1 worst carb ever, high fructose corn syrup has been heavily linked to obesity, weight gain, metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

So did the guy who rung you up at Subway LIE to you when he offered you that "healthy" bag of potato chips to go along with your "healthy" low fat foot long sub?

No, he just clearly doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. (And stop eating at Subway already. Processed meat on high glycemic bread isn't a healthy choice, no matter how many grams of fat it has...)

So skip out on the potato chips...baked or fried.

Another Grateful Customer...

"Kristy, I am so happy to tell you how great I feel. Please share my story so others might also be helped.

I had a hip replacement several years ago because of damage from many years of sports injuries. After the surgery, about 4 times a year, I would get severe cellulitis around the new joint- cellulitis is a very painful and quick-spreading infection that would debilitate me for a few days until the antibiotics kicked in. Since I started taking the supplements you recommended, I have only gotten 2 cases of cellulitis (over a 7 year period). Both times were during periods of high stress in my life, so I'm sure that's why. I'm happy to say it wasn't nearly as bad and didn't last as long as it used to though.

Here's the really amazing part: my other hip also needed replacement, but the surgeon wanted me to fully recover from the first surgery and also wanted to wait until it was absolutely necessary. I had been taking the supplements for about a year by the time I went back for my followup appointment and it was discovered that I no longer needed the replacement. My joint was actually rebuilding itself! My surgeon was absolutely flabbergasted- he had never seen that before and he sent me to several other specialists to see how that could have possibly happened. The only explanation they could come up with was the supplements I was taking.

I feel better than I have in at least 20 years and I owe it all to you. I can't thank you enough for telling me about these great products. I'll never stop taking them- I'd give up my house first!"

Because Laughter Really IS Good Medicine...

Pillsbury Dough Boy Dead At 71

Veteran Pillsbury spokesman, Pop N. Fresh, died yesterday of a severe yeast infection. He was 71. Fresh was buried in one of the largest funeral ceremonies in recent years. Dozens of celebrities turned out, including Mrs. Butterworth, The California Raisins, Hungry Jack, Betty Crocker, and The Hostess Twinkies.

The graveside was piled high with flours as longtime friend Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy, describing Fresh as a man who "never knew how much he was kneaded." Fresh rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with many turnovers.

He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Still, even as a crusty old man, he was a roll model for millions.

Fresh is survived by his second wife. They have two children and one in the oven. The funeral was held at 4:50 for about 20 minutes.
